Mmmmmm.....got me thinking now. The supply is 6mm cable so we'll have to wait and see if it's capable.

6mm what? armoured, 2 core, 3 core, 4 core?
Roughly what length?

If you're talking 3 core-twin and earth, about 15meters in conduit will give you about 40amps max on the cable, that doesn't mean you have 40 amps, you always want to be the lesser side so as not to damage the cable in the event of an over-load, so you'll have a reliable supply of a good 36amps I reckon. I could confirm it later if you like.
Armoured will give you a bit more than that, but 36amp is way more than you should ever need in a shed/garage!

This all sounds exactly like the process in selecting a suitable speed controller for an electric rc heli.

My grandad just made a mahoosive extension lead that ran from the prehistoric junction in the garage, through a garden hose behind the greenhouse, then through a scaffold pole and into the shed. That ran a flouresent light and a plug socket which he ran everything from. That was all into a fuse box in the house that had the wrong fuses. Never had any issues but I'm astounded that the house never caught fire

Well that's me confused them
240v welders run on a plug with a 13 amp fuse so whats all this about current draw ? unless I'm going daft anything above that would just pop the fuse wouldn't it ?
My shed at the old place ran on 10mm twin & earth run in conduit for 25 years & never popped a fuse or tripped the box I was using a 200 amp welder a stereo & 3 double fluorescent lights for a lot of that time
someone please educate me ... in simple terms Would depend on the welder really Slim, my little blue one runs off a 16amp blue plug, not a 13amp, the older welders had basic transformers/inverters in that allowed higher outputs from a basic 13amp, you were ultimately limited by the 240v though. Anything over that requirement would have been 3 phase. Nowadays the newer more reliable inverter welders are much more controllable and efficient, but you'll still only get 13amp out of a mains plug if you're lucky, the welder has a more stable output. Your welder would be 200amp at full capacity I expect, it will be a generated 200amp and not a supplied 200amp, if you get my drift. Sorry, I just read back my post above with my welder pic, I meant to say my welder is on a 16amp not 16amp capacity, it is 180amp capacity, which needs to be on a 16amp plug!

I'll give it a go in the near future and see what happens.

Update pics?
The bastards I contacted sent a surveyor round over a month ago and I've not been given a quote. He wont answer his phone either so they can go fack themselves, their loss.

Filling it up with crap at the moment. Got a few days off now so I'll probably soon find out it's not big enough. Pics tomorrow.

You'll get there in the end, it's just the arse ache of unreliable tradesmen who charge a fortune you've got to get past.
