That and the oil cooled engine, which I think is what's got me liking it more than the usual gs and modern running gear combo.

I think this kind of transformation can either make or break a bike, there are some iconic models that just have to have the original engines to pull it off, in steve's case he's done a great job on updating something that was understated in its day, so I think he has been able to pull it off in its entirety.
Other bikes such as an efe for example just has to have an efe engine in it, regardless of it being blown, bored or nos, it is the engine that made/makes that bike an icon, so without the power plant it's just a shit chassis.

All the 'superbikes' around at that time had a shit chassis ! For me, the EFE is a fantastic looking bike, with it's iconic clocks, and the lines of the tank/seat back to the side panels, and the lovely big rear light, and with a B12/GSXR1100 engine fitted it's even better, and even better still with proper wheels and forks. Same with the Z1000 - absolutely drop dead gorgeous, but a really crap chassis. The 70's and 80's is my favourite era for bikes without doubt.
